Tonight COME TO WHERE I’M FROM London continues at Omnibus in Clapham in South West London.

This evening will see performances from playwright Amman Paul Singh Brar, writer for stage and screen Kathryn Golding, comedian and actress Elena Procopiu, Paines Plough writer Alexandra Wood and former Tamasha Artistic Director and 2010 First Women Award winner Sudha Bhuchar.

Amman Paul Singh Brar
Amman is an MA Creative Writing graduate from the University of East Anglia. One of the inaugural winners of the BBC Writersroom 10 award with Tamasha Theatre, where he was also Artist in Residence, his credits include: STILL ALIVE (West Yorkshire Playhouse), SOMETHING MISSING (Contact Theatre), TEARS AT TERMINAL VELOCITY (Tamasha, Mulberry School, Soho Theatre) and NO MORE POUNDSHOP WARS (BBC, Live Theatre).

Kathryn Golding

Kathryn is a recognised emerging writing talent with a unique voice, who is passionate about diversity and adept across TV and theatre. Graduate of the Royal Court’s Unheard Voices Programme and supported by the Edinburgh International Television Festival, she is currently working on projects for both stage and television. Recent credits include BEING SUZY WONG (Royal Court’s Live Lunch programme) and PLAY 13 (Vault Festival).

Elena Procopiu

Elena is an Anglo-Romanian actress and writer. Having trained as an actor, she has performed stand-up throughout the UK, Europe and in New York and is a multi-lingual voice-over artist in English, Romanian and French. She also presented a piece she co-wrote on The One Show on BBC 1 attempting to dispel myths about Romanians taking all your jobs. Last year, she was commissioned to write a one-woman show for Tamasha Theatre Company.

Alexandra Wood

Alex is a graduate of the MPhil in Playwriting Studies at Birmingham University and the Royal Court Young Writers’ Programme. In 2007 she won the George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright. Her plays include: THE ELEVENTH CAPITAL (Royal Court); THE LION’S MOUTH (Rough Cuts/Royal Court); UNBROKEN (Gate Theatre); DECADE (co-writer/Headlong); an adaptation of Jung Chang’s WILD SWANS (Young Vic/American Repertory Theater); and THE CENTRE (Islington Community Theatre). Short plays include: MILES TO GO (Nabokov/Latitude Festival); THIRTY TWO YEARS IS NOTHING and EXPECTING (BAC/Rose Bruford); MY NAME IS JOHN ALAN ASHLEY (Soho/Oxford School of Drama); and PIIGS (Royal Court).Her most recent play, THE EMPTY QUARTER, played at Hampstead Downstairs in 2013. Work for radio: TWELVE YEARS (BBC Radio 4). In 2010 she was the Big Room Playwright-in-Residence at Paines Plough.

Sudha Bhuchar

Sudha is a playwright and actor.

Writing credits for Tamasha include BALTI KINGS (co-written with Shaheen Khan), FOURTEEN SONGS, TWO WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, STRICTLY DANDIA, A FINE BALANCE (all co- written with Kristine Landon-Smith), her first children’s play CHILD OF THE DIVIDE (Polka Theatre, Best Kids’ Show of 2006 – Time Out) and most recently the critically acclaimed MY NAME IS… which Sudha also adapted for Radio 4 where it was ‘pick of the week’. Sudha’s adaptaion of Lorca’s THE HOUSE OF BERNADA ALBA – THE HOUSE OF BILQUIS BIBI was recently remounted by Mulberry School’s Alumni company. Other writing credits include SMALL FISH BIG CHEESE for the Unicorn Theatre and extensive credits on Radio 4 including three series of GIRLIES (co written with Shaheen Khan). Sudha jointly won, with Kristine Landon-Smith, the 2005 Asian Women of Achievement Award for Arts and Culture and the 2010 First Women Award in the Tourism and Leisure category. Sudha’s extensive acting credits include most recently three series of STELLA for Sky TV and Gurpreet Bhatti’s play KHANDAN for Birmingham Rep/Royal Court theatre in 2014. Sudha is currently filming a guest role on CORONATION STREET.

Good news for South East London

We’ve got some COME TO WHERE I’M FROM news for you. Roy Williams will now perform his COME TO WHERE I’M FROM at Ovalhouse (04 July) rather than The Gate (29 June) as previously advertised. While Roy was born in West London he has lived in South East London for some time now.

It looks like West London’s loss is South East London’s gain. We look forward to seeing you there.

We’re excited to announce four more stellar playwrights will join the line-up for COME TO WHERE I’M FROM London, totalling in 30 writers over six venues between 27 June – 6 July.

Three have been added to the bill at The Gate on 29 June, including award-winning playwright and OBE Roy Williams, Omar El-Khairy and April De Angelis.

At Clapham Omnibus on 28 June, we are also joined by Sudha Bhuchar, former Artistic Director and founder of our COME TO WHERE I’M FROM London partner Tamasha.

We’ve also added Gabriel Bisset-Smith to the line-up at Tricycle Theatre on 27 June.

Goodbye from Natalie…

Last month we bid a fond farewell to our wonderful Administrator, Natalie, as she took up an incredible new role as General Manager of Coney. Sobs rang out all over the office this morning as her goodbye blog arrived in our inboxes. Here, in her own words, she has summed up her time with us. Sad as we are, we know it’s not really au revoir, just à bientôt…

What an incredible two years it’s been. It’s hard to know where to begin and I won’t be able to cover everything that I’d like to. So, I’ll just share some of my fondest memories from my time at Paines Plough in the hope that it’ll highlight how much of an incredible company and inspiring team they are to work for and with.

My very first PP show was Duncan Macmillan’s EVERY BRILLIANT THING. I travelled with Alex Wood our playwright-in-residence at the time, where we found ourselves in the lovely little village of Ledbury at The Market Theatre. It was so close to where my mum lives (out in the regions) that my brother came along. I remember introducing him to both Alex and George and instantaneously thinking, “wow this is really cool, my family can see our work where they are and where I’m from, we travel to them”. Coming from an area with limited access to the arts and a low-income family, I immediately saw how important and impactful touring theatre and new writing was, and knew that I had made it into the right company.

I joined PP as the Admin and Finance Assistant in 2013 through Creative Access, a charity who provide year-long traineeships in the creative industries for people of BAME backgrounds. This marked the beginning of my career in the arts. Without this opportunity, I’d probably be in an industry that I’m not passionate about, struggling to find my way in. Paines Plough were the first theatre organisation to partner with Creative Access, actively addressing lack of diversity in the industry. Unafraid and open – two major qualities that extend way beyond their work.

Watching an intimate dress rehearsal of Andrew Scott in SEA WALL over the bridge in one of the rehearsal studios at The National was a truly unforgettable experience.

I didn’t know what was happening to me when I watched for those 30 minutes, no more than a metre away from him, sucked into his performance and trying really hard to hold floods of tears back. This had never happened to me watching a play before.

Valuable lessons learned:
– I’ll never get left behind in a hotel in Hull after press night again.
– Even though you’ve planned for everyone to meet at the station in good time to catch your train, you’ll always need to run for it #touringPPstyle.
– Pork scratchings vary in taste and texture from region to region. Scottish pubs don’t stock them.
– How to change florescent strip lights and chargers.
– I still can’t do puns…
– Accents, canoeing, ‘being in the lift’ mimes, street dance, the odd prank call and cake really help when you all need a little group pick me up.

COME TO WHERE I’M FROM at the Southbank Centre was a beautiful installation and interactive map designed by Amy Cook, where audiences and passersby could pop in and listen to plays by writers from all over the UK, for free.

Invitation to interact with the space, watch some of the writers read their plays live and to hang out with a beer in an open space is my kind of art. This was a lovely weekend.

Touring from all corners of the UK from the Isle of Eigg to Ipswich, Liverpool to Lyme Regis and Newport to Nottingham involves a lot of trains…

ROUNDABOUT is by far my favourite thing to have been involved in. From its launch in Edinburgh in 2014 to its current Autumn tour, THE HUMAN EAR to LUNGS, Visitor Services to the Street Team, and tea dances in Margate to TORYCORE, the breadth of what Roundabout can do and give is phenomenal.

EVERY BRILLIANT THING in New York and my (and Francesca’s) first ever trip to the US! We had a whirlwind of five days in New York during the opening at Barrow Street Theatre last December.

Working with Hanna and Francesca has been like attending free producing workshops everyday, Aysha has shown me how brilliant being a General Manager is and I take from her into what I do now with Coney, Bhavini and Rachel are the two amazing trainees who like me joined PP though Creative Access; all together they are an incredibly strong, fearless and focused team. I’ve also been lucky enough to work with Claire, Tara, Bene, Bernd and Sean. Paines Plough attracts the most amazing people and I’m just happy to have been a part of the family. Thank you for having me.

We’ve barely had time to unpack our rucksacks after the sunshine and sing-alongs of Latitude but we’re preparing to pack again as we head up to bonny Scotland for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The play is perfect.

The recordings are perfect.

I just need enough people to hit play.

Alexandra Wood on The Initiate

With just a week until ROUNDABOUT pops up at Brighton Festival we caught playwright Alexandra Wood to talk all things THE INITIATE, modern day pirates and  find out just what it’s like to have your play staged in ROUNDABOUT.

So, what inspired you to write THE INITIATE?

Honestly? I wanted to write a play about pirates! It was as simple as that. When I started to research modern day piracy I came across this article about a British Somali man who’d gone back to Somalia to help negotiate the release of British hostages, and I knew I’d found my story. The play didn’t really end up being about pirates of course, although there is still a pirate in it!

And where did you write it?

While I was on attachment at the National Theatre Studio in 2011.

How do you think it compares to your previous plays?

I’m sure there are common themes, identity and belonging are certainly things I seem to come back to. The British characters in The Empty Quarter, for example, find themselves on the edge of a vast desert in Dubai, and try to work out what’s brought them there and why they stay. I’m interested in character: how it’s defined, constructed, portrayed. In The Eleventh Capital we never meet the man about whom the play revolves, a nameless civil servant forced to leave his family and live in the new capital city. We only catch snippets of who he is and things he’s done from other people. In The Initiate, how other people see Dalmar comes as a shock to him, forcing him to question his place and his very idea of himself.

This is the second time PP are producing THE INITIATE, what’s going to be different this time?

Well the obvious answer to that is that there’s a new cast member, Sidney Cole. Not only will he bring something different to the role, but it’ll also change the dynamic with Sian and Abdul. Staging plays in the ROUNDABOUT really does put the actor at the heart of everything, there’s no real set, costume or gimmicks, it’s just actors in a space, so a change of actor will have quite an impact I think.

Speaking of actors – you’ve been sat in on rehearsals over the last few weeks, what’s it been like to watch the ROUNDABOUT company working?

It’s incredibly satisfying to see the commitment with which the whole company’s embracing the play.  It’s my first experience having one of my plays being produced for a second time, but any worries about things feeling stale have been dispelled, everyone’s coming to it with more confidence and a renewed energy.

What’s it like to work in ROUNDABOUT?

It’s a brilliant space. The actors, the play and most importantly the audience’s imagination are at the centre of things. It’s intimate and epic at the same time. It’s inherently theatrical as well – it feels like you really do have to embrace the performance element.

One final question – which part of the play are you most excited to see come to life?

I think I’m most excited to see the play as a whole, which might sound like a cop out, but in rehearsals we spend a long time working line by line, scene by scene, and that’s all great, detailed work which needs to be done, but ultimately, the power will hopefully come from seeing it all together.

THE INITIATE is a part of our Roundabout season 2015. Roundabout pops up at Brighton Festival from 2 May and at Southbank Centre from 7 June.

Roundabout in Brighton

Roundabout is back, and heading for Brighton.

We’re thrilled to be part of a top class line-up at The Brighton Festival this May. Roundabout will pop-up in the beautiful Regency Square over-looking the sea, and host three weeks of unmissable theatre.

Fresh from its hugely acclaimed Off-Broadway run, EVERY BRILLIANT THING by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe is back on home soil for seven performances in Brighton. It’s joined by Duncan Macmillan’s award-winning, much loved LUNGS which returns to the Roundabout Rep alongside Alexandra Wood’s Scotsman Fringe First Award winning THE INITIATE and Dennis Kelly’s wickedly funny OUR TEACHER’S A TROLL for children 7+ and their accompanying trolls.

The Festival runs from 2 – 24 May, and full details of the line-up curated by guest director Ali Smith can be found on the festival website.

We’ll be announcing more tour dates for Roundabout very soon, so stay tuned. Wherever you are we’ll be popping up near you soon.

Roundabout pops up in Edinburgh

Roundabout is our beautiful new pop-up in-the-round theatre.

It’s a completely self-contained 168-seat auditorium that flat packs into a single lorry and can pop up anywhere from theatres to school halls, sports centres to warehouses.

We throw open the doors for the first time on 2 August at Summerhall, as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with plays by three of the UK’s most exciting playwrights, performed by an ensemble of actors:

At the end of the Festival, Roundabout will head out on its inaugural tour to NewburyMargate, Hackney and Barnsley.

We’ve created Roundabout because we’re passionate about new plays and we want as many people as possible to be able to see them. In the coming years, Roundabout will travel the length and breadth of the UK bringing a the nations’s best playwrights and a thrilling theatrical experience to people’s doorsteps.

Beyond Theatre: Alex Wood’s Top Faves

If you’re like us, then you must often get curious about what playwrights watch and read and listen to outside of the theatre bubble we live in.

So we recently grabbed the opportunity to guilt-trip blackmail politely ask our awesome former Playwright-in-Residence (and writer of upcoming thriller THE INITIATE) Alexandra Wood to share a few of her top faves with us.

And she was nice enough to comply:

Favourite books: Runaway by Alice Munro has stayed with me. She uses beautifully simple language to tell stories that take you by surprise, and lets you make connections between the stories, without it ever being heavy-handed or didactic. Lionel Shriver’s We Need To Talk About Kevin is one of the most honest books I’ve ever read – it asks bold questions, and allows space for doubt and interpretation. Paul Auster’s The New York Trilogy is a puzzle of a book – things never seem quite right, which I love. It reminded me of Borges’ short stories, which I read when I want a touch of the enigmatic. I recently discovered John Steinbeck (I know, I’m late to the party!) but I’m loving what I’ve read of his so far.

Favourite films: Anything by Michael Haneke is invariably brilliant. His first film, The Seventh Continent, is devastating in its understated portrayal of the disintegration of a family.  While researching my adaptation of ‘Wild Swans’, I watched some great Chinese films: Blind Shaft (directed by Li Yang) and Still Life (directed by Jia Zhangke) – I loved the imagery in these films of the vast, broken landscapes.  I’m a fan of documentaries, too: Searching for Sugar Man is amazing, I just loved the humility of a Rodriguez, who was such a huge star in South Africa without even knowing it. And Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing, where we watch a man slowly coming to feel remorse for the horrific killings he participated in forty years ago, is an astonishing, completely unique and important film.
